Designed to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment in which to thrive, Women of Courage expeditions can provide a catalyst for powerful growth and change. On this canoe expedition you will begin to open up and communicate with other Indigenous women survivors of violence and abuse, working as a team to navigate this beautiful landscape while you bond. Paddling in these Northern Ontario lakes is a reflective experience, where you will be able to leave the worries of home behind as you focus on the open water ahead of you and take in all that surrounds you. You will walk away from this experience with a strong support group, realizing how far you have come, feeling more at peace and empowered with the self-confidence and resilience to move forward from a place of strength and encouragement.
The group will meet up in Thunder Bay, ON, and then travel to Quetico Provincial Park. There we will explore the rugged beauty, towering rock cliffs, and interconnected lakes that are close to the Anishinabe community of Lac La Croix.
An Outward Bound expedition is not a guided trip, it is an immersive experience led by you and your group. In additional to the personal journey that you undergo, you will also learn the foundations of minimal impact camping, packing for canoe expeditions, mindfulness practices, flatwater canoeing, portaging, navigation and orienteering. Your course also includes a 24-hour solo experience, where you will put your newfound skills into practice under the supervision of our skilled instructional team. Often described as the most transformative part of the experience, your solo also gives you the space to reflect on earlier conversations, absorb important realizations and let go of how we perceive ourselves – leaving you faced only with your true self, and coming to love and appreciate who you really are.

Thanks to the support of our community, our Women of Courage course fees are fully funded by generous donations from a number of dedicated foundations, corporations, individuals and former WOC participants. Participants are responsible for funding their travel to and from the course location. We ask only that participants consider “paying-it-forward” to help other Women of Courage have this experience through a donation to the program.
