Spaces currently available for women who reside in the Maritimes.
Designed to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment in which to thrive, Women of Courage courses can provide a catalyst for powerful growth and change. On this backpacking course you will work as a team with other women survivors of violence and abuse toward your goals together within this breath-taking landscape. You will take turns navigating the group through this rugged terrain, pushing yourself through new and challenging experiences while feeling the support of these other incredible women behind you, helping you to realize your true strength. Furthermore, travel through this challenging route will require you to be present and grounded while these awe-inspiring sea-side views set the perfect stage for a week of reflection, helping you let go of anything holding you back in your past and allowing you to re-create how you envision your future. You’ll return home feeling more confident, loved and reconnected with yourself. Spaces are held on a first-come, first-served basis with priority for women who currently reside in the Maritimes.
Your journey will begin when you are picked up at the airport in Saint John, New Brunswick. From there, you will travel to our wilderness base on Grand Manan Island to get acquainted with the team and outfitted for the week. It is through the incredible landscape of Grand Manan that you will continue your journey, hiking through this world-renowned area of the Bay of Fundy and camping along the coast.
An Outward Bound course is not a guided trip, it is an immersive experience led by you and your group. In addition to the personal journey that you undergo, you will also learn the foundations of minimal impact camping, packing for hiking expeditions, navigation and orienteering. Your course also includes a solo experience, where you will put your new-found skills into practice under the supervision of our skilled instructional team. Often described as the most transformative part of their experience, your solo also gives you the space to reflect on earlier conversations, absorb important realizations and let go of how we perceive ourselves – leaving you faced only with your true self, and coming to love and appreciate who you really are.
Day 1: We begin our journey in Saint John where we introduce you to the course and each other, review equipment and packing, and have some fun at the retreat house on the bay.
Day 2: You will begin the camping portion of the journey with a ferry to the island and settle into camp. Here, you will start a series of reflective exercises and learn to camp craft.
Day 3-4: You will hike and backpack the coastal route. The route is very rugged and physically challenging with spectacular natural scenery.
Day 5-6: You will challenge yourself through a solo period, during which time you will reflect on yourself and the experience.
Day 7: The final leg of hike to reach lighthouse! Afterwards, you will celebrate with dinner, songs and laughter!
Day 8: You will return to the mainland.
Thanks to the support of our community, our Women of Courage course fees are fully funded by generous donations from a number of dedicated community fundraisers, foundations, corporations, individuals and former WOC participants. Participants are responsible for funding their travel to and from the course location. We ask only that participants consider “paying-it-forward” to help other Women of Courage have this experience through a donation to the program.
