Outward Bound Canada Veterans’ courses are designed to mirror select military experiences and offer opportunities to reflect on and discuss your deployment experiences, transition challenges and the impact these have on your lives. Kayaking on the Bay of Fundy is not only an inspiring experience, but also a reflective one. Being with this group in this world-renowned location will put your life into perspective, give you a new community of like-minded individuals to lean on and remind you of all that you are capable of. By the end of this course you will feel a strong connection to your fellow veterans, and will be reconnected with your ability to serve others, to strive for the very best, and not to yield in the face of challenge.
Your journey will begin when you are picked up at the airport in Saint John, New Brunswick. From there, you will travel to the training campsite at St. Andrews to get acquainted with the team and outfitted for the week. Kayaking will be in tandem or single kayaks moving through a progression of skills; from learning your first paddling techniques to practising ocean travel skills including paddling and bracing techniques, ocean navigation using nautical charts and tide tables, and safety and rescue procedures. The adventure continues with the expedition around the Passamaquoddy Bay and the Western Isles. Meandering along coves and through countless islands and channels you will be exposed to the beauty and diversity of the Bay of Fundy. The expedition concludes upon reaching the south end of Deer Island where the team will stay the night at the Deer Island Inn with a hearty meal and a warm bed for the final night.
This course is designed to be accessible for veterans of all ages and fitness levels and no previous experience is required.
