Outward Bound Canada Veterans’ courses are designed to mirror select military experiences and offer opportunities to reflect on and discuss your deployment experiences, transition challenges and the impact these have on your lives. Hiking through the mountains is a reflective experience. The beautiful landscape puts our life experiences in perspective, provides space from your day to day, and encouragement from other veterans gives you a safe space to look inward. By the end of this course you will feel a strong connection to your fellow veterans, and will be reconnected with your ability to serve others, to strive for the very best, and not to yield in the face of challenge.
Your journey will begin when you meet your group at the Calgary Airport. From there, you will travel deep into the Rocky Mountains until you reach Bugaboos Provincial Park, which is rich with a host of potential hiking trails and where the prairies rear up to the mountains making this a powerful place to reflect and enjoy.
This course is designed to be accessible for veterans of all ages and fitness levels, staying in CMH lodges at night and only carrying a light daypack for your hikes. Through this experience you will learn skills such as route planning, appropriate packing techniques for day hikes, navigation and orienteering.
Thanks to the generous support of individual donors, corporations and a number of dedicated foundations, Outward Bound Canada is able to offer Veterans’ courses free-of-charge. All course fees, equipment, meals, accommodations, gear, clothing and travel expenses are provided without any fee to the participant.
