Outward Bound Canada Veterans’ courses are designed to mirror select military experiences and offer opportunities to reflect on and discuss your deployment experiences, transition challenges and the impact these have on your lives. On the Ski Mountaineering course, you will have to work with your team to navigate snow-covered trails, ensure the group is warm and well taken care of in this winter climate and you will have to work together to manage environmental and human hazards. By the end of this course you will feel a strong connection to your fellow veterans, and will be reconnected with your ability to serve others, to strive for the very best, and not to yield in the face of challenge.
Your journey begins when you meet your group at the Canmore Coast Hotel in Canmore, Alberta. From there you will make your way to Assiniboine Lodge, deep in the Rocky Mountains. You will cross over into British Columbia and spending most of your time near The Great Divide, where the height of land assists in the production of snow.
Like all Outward Bound courses the goal of the Veterans ski touring skills course is to develop independence and resiliency in the backcountry environment so that the participants have a new skill-set to use in the future.
This ski mountaineering course is designed to empower strong intermediate skiers to take on the challenges of backcountry skiing. Participants must be strong intermediate downhill skiers at a minimum (on either Telemark or Alpine Gear), and able to maintain control in all conditions. You will be making parallel turns on hard-packed snow, and you must be comfortable learning to maintain control on even difficult slopes. Furthermore, you must be comfortable taking a few spills and be ready pick yourself up again and carry on.
Thanks to the generous support of individual donors, corporations and a number of dedicated foundations, Outward Bound Canada is able to offer Veterans’ courses free-of-charge. All course fees, equipment, meals, accommodations, gear, clothing and travel expenses are provided without any fee to the participant.
