YOUR INNER JOURNEY

Outward Bound Canada Discovery courses are designed to help you discover something new about yourself.  Everyone takes away something inspiring and personal – whether it’s noticing a new talent or skill, finding a great friend, realizing your own strengths, or making peace with something you have been struggling with.  In addition, our Discovery courses will give you leadership training and the confidence to achieve even more in your life at home.  You will learn how to work effectively with a group, how to feel empowered in your interactions with others, how to be a fair and powerful leader, and how to approach uncertain or intense situations responsibly – whether the circumstances are physically, mentally, or emotionally difficult. In one word, we will teach you “resilience”, and you will return ready to take on whatever awaits you in your life – no matter how daunting it may have seemed before.

AREA & ACTIVITIES

When you take part in this day program running from 10am-4pm Monday-Friday, you will begin each day’s journey by meeting your group at Evergreen Brick Works in downtown Toronto or, on occasion, at other TTC-accessible locations in Toronto. Our Urban Base at Evergreen Brick Works sits at the heart of the Don Valley ravine system – giving us access to the city’s vast hiking trail system and space for initiatives, such as climbing our 65-foot Challenge Tower or learning to start a campfire in the fire pits on site.  Furthermore, our partnership with Harbourfront Centre gives us access to canoes close to home, so you will learn to paddle right in the city on one of Toronto’s rivers or waterways – eventually even paddling out to Toronto’s Snake Island, where we will camp overnight.

In addition to the personal journey that you undergo, you will also learn the foundations of hiking, canoeing, minimal impact camping, packing for hiking expeditions, as well as navigation and orienteering. Course work for your high school credit will be done through these activities, group discussions and analysis, and daily journal reflections. By the end of the course, you will not only have a High School Credit, but you will have a unique perspective on your city and all the skills needed to continue pursuing adventures in the city and in the  wilderness beyond it.
