I recall watching a National Geographic special on Outward Bound when I was in grade school. At that moment I knew in my heart that I would do an Outward Bound course. That moment arrived when I was 18 years old in the summer of 1978 when as a member of the Logan Patrol I spent four weeks at the Outward Bound Mountain School in the Cascade mountains near Keremeos, BC. It was a transformative moment in my life and since then Outward Bound has occupied a special place in my heart.
I had the good fortune to do another OB expedition in 2007, this time in Bhutan with one of my great life time friends who was part of my Logan Patrol. Then again last fall on another Reach Beyond Outward Bound adventure my wife and I experienced the magnificent beauty of Iceland’s rugged landscape. I’m excited to be heading to the Nahanni with OB and my great friend who I met way back in 1978 at my first Outward Bound experience.
I’m a physician by training but retired from my specialist practice completely in my 40’s to pursue another way of engaging. In 2001 I co-founded the Somerset Foundation and have been it’s Chair since. Our mission is to support Social Innovation and Wellbeing, and through Somerset I engage with social purpose organizations where my input and interest relates primarily to organizational governance, structure, strategic policy development and financial sustainability. It’s been a wonderful ride. I love photography, music and travelling. My wife Nancy and I live in Vancouver and Naramata B.C. and between us we have four wonderful daughters.
